(D) Cartoon representation of proposed cellular interactions. The communication between xanthophores and iridophores is mediated by connexins41.8 and 39.4. The melanophore-xanthophore communication is a multi-step process, initially xanthophores react to incoming melanophores independently of the known connexins, however, later steps are dependent on Cx41.8 and Cx39.4.
