Definition
Extraocular muscle that runs parallel to the long axis of the fish and inserts on the caudal side of the eye at the sclera-corneal . The lateral rectus muscles originate substantially posterior to the other rectus muscles. The lateral rectus is innervated by the abducens nerve. The unsegmented paraxial head mesoderm contributes to the lateral rectus. (1)
