Definition
A mixture typically containing kieselguhr (diatomaceous earth), iron powder, citric acid and sodium carbonate. When moistened with water, it rapidly combines with any oxygen present and produces carbon dioxide. It is used in microbiology to generate an anaerobic atmosphere (e.g. in an appropriate incubation bag) for the cultivation of obligate and faculative anaerobes.
