Desvignes et al. (2008) originally identified this gene as nme8, an ortholog to mammalian NME8, based, in part, on the mis-identified X. tropicalis gene/protein NP_001121456. Updated genome information indicates that nme8 was lost in zebrafish (and some other teleosts), suggesting this gene is actually orthologous to mammalian NME9
