Term Name: | cerebrospinal fluid contacting neuron |
---|---|
Synonyms: | CSF-cN, CSF-cNs |
Definition: | Spinal cord interneuron located along the central canal that extends a microvilliated apical process into the cerebrospinal fluid and extends ascending axonal projections ventrally and ipsilaterally. CSF-cNs are GABAergic neurons that express PKD2L1 (TRPP3) channels and have been shown to be chemosensory and mechanosensory, responding to pH and osmolarity changes as well as mechanical stimuli associated with tail bending. CSF-cNs originate from two distinct progenitor domains, p3 and pMN. CSF-cNs project onto caudal primary (CaP motor neurons) and commissural primary ascending (CoPA) sensory interneurons within the escape circuit as well as onto V0-v interneurons within the slow swimming circuit. |
