Definition: | Portion of tissue that arises from the arise from the lateral edges of the shield and is located immediately ventral to the notochord. The hypochord is thought to play a role in positioning the dorsal aorta. Unlike in frogs and axolotl, the hypochord does not appear to be endodermally derived. |
