Definition: | Glycoinositol phospholipids (GIPLs) are abundant components of protozoa of the genus Leishmania. An identical core glycan is found in all cases, consisting of ethanolamine phosphate, three mannose residues and non-acetylated glucosamine linked to inositol. GIPLs anchor proteins expressed on the surface of essentially all eukaryotic cells and may endow such proteins with unusual properties. |
