Definition: | A branched amino hexasaccharide, denoted Le(a)Le(x), consisting of a tetrasaccharide backbone of beta-D-galactosyl, N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminyl, beta-D-galactosyl and D-glucosamine residues linked glycosidically in a (1->3), (1->3), (1->4) sequence, the N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminyl and reducing-end N-acetyl-D-glucosamine residues of which also carry alpha-L-fucosyl residues via (1->4) and (1->3) glycosidic linkages respectively. The mouse anti-Le(a) monoclonal antibody SPM 522 has been reported to bind to Le(a)Le(x) better than to Le(a) alone. |
