STATEMENT OF RESEARCH INTERESTS
Axon growth and regeneration in the vertebrate central nervous system (CNS) is governed by neuron intrinsic properties and molecular components in the neuron's environment.
We investigate the function of specific cell surface proteins in the CNS of fish whose expression accompanies axon growth in the embryo and successful axon regeneration (upon lesion) in the adult. Also we analyze expression of related proteins in the CNS of mammals under conditions which allow some lesioned neurons to regenerate their axons. In addition the properties of CNS glial cells are being explored with emphasis on their contribution to success of axon regeneration and fiber tract repair in fish and other "lower" vertebrates.
